When normal sounds become annoying

Misophonia is an extremely strong dislike of normal sounds, and is often misdiagnosed as hyperacusis. The degree of reaction is not based on the properties of the sound, such as loudness and pitch, but on the patient’s past experiences with certain sounds and overall state of mind.

Misophonia is often confused with phonophobia (fear of loud sounds). For instance, with phonophobia, some people fear that a relatively quiet sound can actually damage their hearing and therefore must be avoided. When a strong fear is evoked by sound, a person may be considered phonophobic.

Misophonia commonly occurs along with hyperacusis and/or tinnitus, but can appear by itself. One of the tools we use to treat misophonia at AC Associates is called Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT). TRT recognizes the specific involvement of various components of the auditory pathways of the nervous system in occurrences of tinnitus, hyperacusis and misophonia. For treatment of misophonia, TRT uses a method based on the active removal of conditioned reflexive responses to sound, allowing patients to feel like themselves again.
